Hay-on-Wye
Our train did not leave Bath until 10:30, which gave us time to grab a final mocha at Society Café.
Our train left about 30 minutes late, but the ride to Bristol was only 13 minutes. The #8 bus took us from the train station to a stop about 0.3 mile from Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
We parked & walked up to the Clifton Observatory to see the Clifton Suspension Bridge spanning the Avon Gorge & the River Avon.

From Bristol we drove to Tinturn Abbey on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, made famous when William Wordsworth penned the poem Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey.
The Queen Inn in Cwmbran, Wales, is frequently ranked among the very best vegan restaurants in the world—a remarkable achievement for the staff of this unassuming village pub.
Tiny Rebel is Wales’ largest independent craft brewery located in Newport, South Wales. This was their cask ale & it was very refreshing.
For a starter we ordered the spiced “lamb,” hummus, & pita bread platter. I lost my bloody mind eating this! The pita was pillowy soft, the hummus perfection, & the “lamb” was out of this world!
The Sunday roast menu worked by selecting your roast. I chose the garlic mushroom crumble in the ramekin. All roasts included seasoned vegetables, “roasties” (roasted potatoes), Yorkshire pudding, sage stuffing, & a boat of gravy.
I’ve gotta say, the food was so delicious I had to take a moment to compose myself.
Amanda’s roast (top) was the chicken en croûte with mozzarella, basil, & sun-dried tomatoes. She absolutely loved it!
Jaffa orange fudge cake & ice cream for dessert. Our dinner proved beyond any doubt that its reputation as a world-class vegan restaurant is thoroughly deserved.
The small stream & waterfall in front of the pub. The staff were wonderfully friendly, adding to the warmth of an already delightful experience.
The Tiny Townhouse in Hay-on-Wye was little in the best possible way—full of cozy cottage warmth.
5 Heol Y Dwr was simple but nicely appointed & near enough the center of town to be convenient yet quiet.

For dinner I had portobello mushrooms & new potatoes in a caponata with micro greens. Delicious!
