Wrexham

On Tues morning, we enjoyed a farewell breakfast at The Cozy Café before bidding our lovely little cottage adieu. My hash browns, sun-dried tomatoes, & piquanté peppers, served on a bed of fresh greens & chili jam, were a delightful treat.

We stopped at the Ludlow Tesco Superstore for some chocolate biscuits & a bag of Billington's Demerara Sugar. 😋

We then walked 3 miles in the Mortimer Forest hunting for toadstools 🍄. Sadly, we found none. 😔 However, our forest bathing did reveal many other small delights.

In Wrexham we checked out the Minors Monument, famous from the opening credits of Welcome to Wrexham.

Between the hike & the drive, we were knackered, so we retired to our room at Premier Inn Wrexham City Centre for some downtime.

No longer in Airbnbs, we spent most of Wed morning at Dolly Tub Launderette doing laundry. Afterward we were fortunate to have selected Lot 11 for lunch.

Amanda was hesitant, but her bravery was rewarded with this tasty sweet potato falafel & hummus on sourdough sandwich.

My Lot Smashed Avo was served on a thick chunk of fresh sourdough bread with rocket, hummus, & chili jam drizzle. Lot 11 was 10/10!

The traditional Seven Wonders of Wales are a group of notable landmarks in North Wales, famously listed together in an anonymous late-18th or early-19th-century rhyme. They include the Wrexham Steeple: the ornate 16th-century tower of St Giles' Church in Wrexham (actually a grand tower rather than a steeple).

The grave of Elihu Yale. Born in Boston in 1649, Elihu spent much of his life in England, Wales, and India. A controversial & often ruthless figure, he amassed a considerable fortune & made substantial donations to the Collegiate School of Connecticut, which was renamed Yale College in his honor & eventually became Yale University in New Haven.

An inscribed stone taken from St Giles' Church in Wrexham, Wales, was placed at the base of the Wrexham Tower in Saybrook College at Yale University in the USA.

At the end of WWII, the 129th General Hospital US Army gave a flag to Wrexham in gratitude for the town's hospitality (left). This flag was replaced in 2005 & the original has since been preserved. In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion in China, US Marines & the Royal Welch Fusiliers served together. The USMC colors (right) were presented to the Fusiliers at the church in 1945.

Elihu Yale purchased this painting of King David on the lyre in Rome & later donated it to the church. It is thought to be quite valuable..

It’s finally time to visit The Turf‼️

The Turf Butty Van is an institution from the TV series. The Kop Stand, a concrete terrace built in 1952, was demolished to make way for this new 7,750-seat‍ addition.

Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds say “Welcome to Wrexham” in Welsh.
