Jim & His Children
1. Ruth pregnant with their first child inside the Thetford Rd row house. Notice the dog Holly on the stairs. This couch has since been reupholstered at least twice. It is seen in photos inside the Camarillo house and still sits in the patio 56+ years later.
2. Ruth pregnant with Steve inside the Thetford Rd house. Neither Ruth nor Jim remember this particular couch.

17. On the morning, of July 13, 1972, Jim and Ruth welcomed their second son David James into the world at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), in Orange, CA. Here are Jim, Ruth, Dave, Jean (Jim’s sister and Dave’s Godmother), and Pastor Showalter at Dave’s baptism at Red Hill Lutheran Church.
18. In front of the Tustin house on the day of Dave’s baptism.
19. Adolph, Steve, Mildred, Jim, Ruth, Dave, Mildred, and Pat in front of the Tustin house on the day of Dave’s baptism.

23. Jim holding Dave with Steve on the wing of an old airplane at an unknown location.
24. Long before “the Lynch’s Cabin” at Green Valley Lake, the Peters family from RHLS allowed Jim to use their cabin located on a bay along the south shore of Big Bear Lake. Demonstrating classic, old-school parenting, Jim teeters precariously on the Peters’ dock with his back turned to Steve as he plays with lake muck while leaning over the side a rowboat.
25. Ruth, Jim, and the two boys in the same red rowboat at the dock by the Peters’ cabin. If the Neumanns were the von Trapps, this could have been the cover of their first album.
26. Jim holds Dave alongside Pat (Ruth’s father) at the Big Bear Zoo during a visit to the Peters’ cabin.
27. On the lawn in front of the Tustin house.
28. July 4, 1974, at Tustin Meadows Park.

31. On the evening of February 5, 1975, Jim and Ruth welcomed their third son Timothy Paul into the world at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), in Orange, CA. Here, Don and Karen Larson, close family friends and Tim’s Godparents, join Ruth, Tim, and Jim on the day of Tim'‘s baptism at Red Hill Lutheran Church. This photo was taken in front of the fireplace in the living room at the Tustin house.
32. Jim holding baby Tim in the family room at the Tustin house. This is the same couch from the picture of Ruth pregnant with Steve in the Thetford Rd house in Towson, MD. The patch was an outmoded attempt to correct “lazy eye” (amblyopia) in the opposite eye.
33. Jim with his boys in the Tustin family room.
34. Tim as a toddler in yet another photo taken on the front lawn of the Tustin home.
35. The Thompson’s van is in the background.

43. After three boys, on the afternoon of May 1, 1978, Jim and Ruth finally welcomed a girl, Deborah Ruth, into the world at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), in Orange, CA. This photo was taken on the front lawn of the Tustin house, perhaps on the day of her baptism at Red Hill Lutheran Church. The fencing behind them was an attempt to keep the boys and the neighbor kids from cutting between the Neumann and Gill houses. The Gills replaced the Thompsons after they moved to Nipomo, CA. Undoubtedly, the blockade was paid little heed!
44. The first family portrait with the complete Neumann family.
45. Debbie as a toddler seated on Jim’s lap in the living room at Christmastime 1979 or 1980.
46. Jim holding Tim and Debbie in the dining room of the Tustin house at Christmastime 1979 or 1980. The wooden chairs are still on the patio of the Camarillo home.
47. Jim and family on the front lawn of the Tustin house with Pat (Ruth’s father). This is the first time the roof of the sandbox Pat built can be seen in the background. It’s unclear what Dave did to deserve the suit.
48. Jim and family in the living room of Pat and Mildred’s living room in Kingsville, MD.
49. Jim with his four kids at the beach.
50. Jim and his kids with the family Christmas tree in 1979 or 1980. The photo was taken in the driveway of the Tustin house beside the Plymouth, sporting a Lutheran Marriage Encounter sticker. The original black convertible top has been replaced in white and the pinstripes on either side repainted to match.
51. The family on the Balboa Island Ferry in Newport Beach, CA.
52. Given that Steve and Dave are clearly wearing the same outfits, this photo was probably taken on the same day as the ferry photo and Jim and his four kids are standing on the Newport Beach Balboa Pier.
53. Debbie helping Jim plant flowers in the backyard of the Tustin home.
54. Much like the Peters family before them, the Lynch family had children who attended Red Hill Lutheran School. They liked Jim and offered the use of their cabin at 33884 Cedar Oak Ln, Green Valley Lake, CA. Dubbed “The Lynch’s Cabin,” it became a place of much family lore.

60. Tim, Dave, Jim, and Debbie at Gregory Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
61. A family visit with Adolph and Mildred. The painting on the wall was done by George Neumann (the little boy seen washing the c. 1949 Frazer Manhattan on Dittmar Dr with Jim) and is now owned by Jacob and Laura Arredondo. This was inside Adolph and Mildred’s house at 156 Pflueger Ave, Glendora, CA.
62. Tim, Steve, Debbie, and Dave making Easter eggs at the kitchen bar in the Tustin house. Adolph’s wallpaper is now visible behind Dave.

68. Steve and Jim shake hands at a Scouting ceremony held inside the old Fellowship Hall (now Christian Life Center) at Red Hill Lutheran Church. Tim is next to Ruth.
69. Jim presenting Dave with a scholarship award, likely during a Wednesday chapel service, inside Red Hill Lutheran Church.
70. The Neumann and Gustovson families near the Gustovson’s cabin in Idyllwild, CA. As Jim was searching for a position after RHLS, the Gustovsons were part of the committee that extended a call to Jim to be principal in Torrance. Although he did not accept the position, the families became friends.
71. In 1986, after a brief stay at a rental house at 1897 E Landen St in Camarillo, the family purchased this house at 91 Camino Castenada. As of 2025, the family had owned the home for 39 years. The large tree along the left side of the driveway was removed before the photo was taken, but the driveway had not yet been replaced. The famous olive tree is on the right. Jim and Ruth paid $42K in 1970 for the Tustin house. After months of delay, they finally sold the house on December 31, 1986, for $163,500. In 2025 it was worth $1.2M.
72. In 1986, apparently the family had not yet decided to take all photos in front of the olive tree. Notice the Datsun B210 station wagon from Grandma Neumann in the street.
73. A family photo with the Plymouth on Calle Alberca, overlooking Camarillo. Tim is holding the family’s third Beagle Ham. The Plymouth is looking her worst in white.

90. In 1996: Amanda (pregnant with Matt), Steve, Ruth, and Jim outside Steve’s first assignment at the Central Los Angeles CHP office. This was the original office used in the filming of the “CHiPs” TV series. The building has since been replaced, but it remains located inside the southwest cloverleaf of the I-110 and I-10 interchange in downtown Los Angeles. The patrol car was a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, Steve’s all time favorite patrol vehicle.
91. Jim seated with Steve and Amanda inside the original briefing room at the Central Los Angeles CHP office at 777 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles. This was the same briefing room used to film the original “CHiPs” TV series. Jim went on a ride along with Steve that afternoon.
92. Jim, Dave, Steve, and Tim inside 356 Otono Ct, Camarillo, CA on Steve’s 30th birthday. The party in March 2000 was held just days before Steve, Amanda (pregnant with Will), Matt, and Jeff moved from the house to an apartment in Paso Robles, CA. Tim was also a CHP Officer at this time.
